“Achtung Jabo!” » This simple cry of warning in a German column could spread fear among a troop deprived of means of anti-aircraft protection faced with the firepower of Allied fighter-bombers appearing in the sky to drop their bombs, fire their salvos of rockets and machine gun its ranks. A key element of the all-out war waged against the Axis forces at the tactical level by the American, British and, to a lesser extent, Soviet air forces from 1941 to 1945, the Allied fighter-bombers had their full impact on the course of events by inflicting severe losses on the fighting units of the Wehrmacht, the Japanese army and the Regio Esercito, as well as on their logistical columns in the immediate rear of the battlefield, without forgetting the direct support provided to friendly land units.
From the first RAF raids on the coast of occupied Europe to the ground attacks supporting the invasion of the Reich, including A-36 Apaches and P-40s in the Asia-Pacific as well as P-39 Airacobras provided by the Americans to Soviet aviation, Luc Vangansbeke tells us the story of these planes which contributed decisively to the Allied victory during the Second World War.
