At a time when trolleybuses were integrating more and more common mechanical elements with buses, the Berliet Vétra VA3 B2 became essential vehicles in the history of public transport in Lyon. Indeed, their arrival on the market coincided with the decision of the OTL (Office des Transports en Commun de Lyon) to replace the last trams.
The Berliet Vétra VA3 B2 have marked the history of three emblematic lines of Lyon:
Line 4: Perrache - Parc de la Tête d’Or
For a century, from 1891 to 1991, line 4 connected Perrache station to Tête d'Or park. Operated by trolleybuses from 1956, it was served by VA3 B2s from 1960.
Line 7: Perrache - Cusset
Line 7 was the pride of the OTL, crossing the Lyon peninsula, passing through Place Bellecour, Rue de la République, and the Morand Bridge. It was converted into a trolleybus in 1955 and the VA 3 B2s were ordered in two series to replace it.
Line 18: Place Sathonay - Gerland
Line 18 connected Place Sathonay to Gerland via the Lafayette Bridge and the main avenues of Saxe and Jean Jaurès. It was the last to receive trolleybuses as part of the 1947 renovation plan.
