Porsche emerged from the chaos and rubble of the Second World War to offer its first car, the 356, in 1948. In seventeen years of life, from 1948 to 1965, the 356 has evolved through four distinct series, with coupes, convertibles, speedsters, hardtops and roadsters among the body variants. Racing models were introduced from 1953, and the Rennsport Spyders dominated racing for more than a decade. In doing so, it gave birth to some of the largest cars of the Stuttgart firm, such as the 550 Spyder, the Speedster and the 904.
From the titled European gentlemen of the 1950s to movie stars like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen in the 1960s, the first Porsches attracted enthusiasts and riders. Today, the 356, with its many variants, is a leading classic car and a style icon. This book celebrates the car that launched one of the greatest sports car brands in the history of the automobile.
