I was a motor sport journalist for The Observer from 1990 to 2010, as well as a correspondent covering F1 for BBC Radio Live. I have written more than a dozen books on F1, including the recent F1 Highlights: 1950 to the Present, as well as numerous biographies of drivers and team managers. - This is an official book, published in association with Formula One ® to mark the 70th anniversary of F1 - Formula One attracts an annual audience of 1.92 billion viewers, with over 500 million fans worldwide and 24.9 million followers on social networks. - I gained unique access to Chase Carey and Ross Brawn, CEO and Sporting Director of Formula One Group respectively, who run the F1 World Championship. Ross Brawn also contributed a foreword. Formula One: The Official Story is a beautifully illustrated chronicle of Formula One, tracing the world drivers' championship decade by decade from the first race on 13 May 1950 through 70 editions. Few sports have changed as much as Formula One, but it has remained broadly the same - high-speed competition in cars built to the highest possible level of technical performance. This book traces the history of the championship and highlights the heroes of the sport as well as the growth and diversity of each season, the struggles for the world title, the arrival and departure of manufacturers, but also the key moments and the major safety improvements. I had unique access to the organisers, and each chapter features the greatest drivers and teams, important employees, major or infamous incidents, and important rule changes concerning design, safety and competitiveness. All in all, Formula One: The Official Story is a fantastic celebration of one of the most popular, spectacular and glamorous sports.
