On August 3rd 1914, Germany declares war on France. As everywhere, the men of Saint-Chamond leave for the Front. Quickly, the shortage of weapons and ammunition becomes critical. The Compagnie des Forges et Aciéries de la Marine et d'Homécourt, known as Saint-Chamond, is asked to increase its production. Men who had been mobilised returned to the factories, but the lack of manpower was consequent.
Women, in great number, will come to work in the factories of Saint-Chamond, in trying, even dangerous working conditions. New materials will be studied and built: guns, shells... in ever increasing quantities. 400 "Saint-Chamond" tanks were produced between 1916 and 1918, at the rate of one tank per day. This book tells how Saint-Chamond managed to implement important human, material and logistic means to participate to the war effort.
